Are you feeling anxious or uncertain about the state of our nation and world today? With the decline of Christianity and a constantly shifting political landscape, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, what if I told you that true hope to change a nation doesn’t rest in politicians or policies, but in God? This isn’t just a comforting idea—it’s a real call to action for Christians everywhere. By returning to timeless biblical principles, we can inspire meaningful, lasting change. Let’s explore how, by looking to Scripture and the examples of faithful believers throughout history, we can make a difference in our world today.
Christianity in Decline: Why we need to change a nation
The decline of Christianity in America is undeniable. In 1972, 90% of Americans identified as Christians. By 2020, this number had dropped to just 64%, a startling shift in less than 50 years. While we may long for policies or political figures who can turn things around, the Bible reminds us that real transformation happens when God works through His people.
The stories of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and Daniel provide insight into how believers can hold onto faith, even in a society that doesn’t value or promote it. These young men were living in exile, in a culture hostile to their faith, yet they remained steadfast and were used by God to demonstrate His power. Their story is a reminder to us today: When we place our hope in God, and not in politics, and allow Him to work through us, we become catalysts for change.
These 4 men known of good character who were believers of the one true God, living in non-believing countries. These main characters chose in the face of real life threatening punishments to not follow commands they believed were against God and what they were called to live. Even during the confrontations, they respected their leaders. Calling them their majesty and their king. And at the end of these stories, the nations themselves turned into believing nations!
Steps to Change a Nation
Now these men were familiar with this popular verse found in 2 chronicles. Solomon had finished building the temple 300 years or so before the book of Daniel. And in the dedication of the temple, we find this promise of God to his people. He starts with at times things may get bad, but
“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
-2 Chronicles 7:14
This was a call to the people of God. This is not for unbelievers this is for the church, and I believe these are the steps to change a nation.
1. Humble Yourself: The First Step to Change a Nation
True change starts with humility. Before we look outward to address the problems around us, we need to look inward. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 7:1-5 to remove the log from our own eye before addressing the speck in someone else’s. Often, we are quick to judge others while ignoring issues within our own lives and communities. The Bible calls us to humility, acknowledging our own shortcomings and choosing to build unity within the church.
Action Step: Take time for personal reflection. Spend a few minutes each day in prayer, asking God to reveal areas in your life where you can grow in humility, compassion, and patience. Reflect on ways you can work toward unity in your church community and relationships. Consider where you can take action in your personal life to create change for the very things you believe our nation needs. By humbling ourselves, we create a foundation for change that God can build upon.
2. Pray and Seek God’s Face: Unleashing the Power of Prayer
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel like our voices aren’t heard, but God always hears the prayers of His people. Instead of turning to social media or political debates as our first response, we should follow the example of Daniel. When he faced an unjust law that prohibited prayer, Daniel continued his daily routine of praying three times a day, trusting God for wisdom and strength (Daniel 6:10).
1 Timothy 2:1-4 reminds us of the importance of prayer. Prayer is more than just words; it’s a powerful means by which God can transform hearts, minds, and even nations.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
-1 Timothy 2:1-4
Action Step: Commit to a daily habit of prayer. Start by setting aside five minutes each day to pray specifically for the leaders of our country, local officials, and those in positions of influence. Pray for guidance, wisdom, and discernment for these leaders, and ask God to help them make decisions that align with His will. Prayer is something every Christian can do, regardless of age, experience, or location, and its impact is profound.
3. Turn from Your Wicked Ways: Living as Citizens of Heaven
God calls us to live as citizens of heaven, as Paul instructs in Philippians 1:27. While political agendas may offer temporary solutions, our primary focus should be on the eternal mission of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. This means our identity and actions must reflect Jesus’ love and grace rather than being driven by worldly agendas.
Turning from our wicked ways requires daily, intentional choices to live in a way that honors God. Wickedness in the Old Testament often has to do with idolatry. Idolatry is not just putting our faith in something other than God, its also where we put our identity. Are we more known for our political stance, or for our faith in Jesus? Are we promoting division or striving to reflect God’s love in everything we do? The answer to these questions helps us see where we need to grow.
Action Step: Spend time reflecting on your conversations, relationships, and online interactions. Are they marked by love, patience, and kindness, or by divisiveness and anger? Consider whether your house, your clothing, and especially your social media feeds, reflect Christ first. Seek to make faith in Jesus the defining characteristic of your life, letting His love guide every interaction. This not only strengthens your faith but also serves as a powerful witness to others.
The Hope to Change the Nation Lies in Faithful Christians
The hope for our nation doesn’t rest on politicians, policies, or laws. It rests in the hands of Christians who choose to humble themselves, pray, and live in alignment with God’s will. When we choose faith over fear and unity over division, we become part of a movement that can truly transform lives and inspire others.
The changes we long to see in our nation start with us. By focusing on faith, humility, and compassion, we can be the light that guides others back to God. Imagine the impact if every believer prayed daily, sought unity within the church, and chose love over discord. This is how nations are changed—one heart at a time, one prayer at a time.
