6 Parts of Embracing Grief and Loss with Jesus

You might wonder why we need to talk about embracing grief and loss. After all, isn’t life supposed to be about joy and abundance? Yet, if you’re like me, you’ve faced moments of deep sorrow and loss that seem to weigh you down. How do we navigate these heavy stones in our souls? Today, let’s explore how we can embrace our grief and loss with Jesus, allowing Him to transform us fully from the inside out.

Understanding the Weight of Loss

Loss comes in many forms. It could be the unexpected death of a loved one, a sudden disability, a divorce, or even the loss of a lifelong dream. Sometimes, it’s the more “normal” losses like moving to a new place, children growing up, or changes at work. Regardless of the type, loss demands to be grieved. When we fail to attend to our losses, they accumulate in our souls, preventing us from living freely and honestly with God and others.

Why Grieving Matters

You might think that grieving is an interruption, something that slows you down. But the truth is, embracing our losses in God’s way actually advances His mission in us. When we allow ourselves to grieve, we open the door for Jesus to transform us fully. Peter Scazzero, in his book “Emotionally Healthy Discipleship,” points out that society resists losing control and views loss as an interruption. Yet, it’s in these moments of pain that God does His most profound work in us.

Grieving is not a waste of time; it’s a crucial part of our spiritual journey. Jesus wants to walk through your grief with you, transforming your pain into new life.

Pieces to Embracing Grief and Loss

1. Gently and Slowly Confront the Reality of the Loss

You can’t grieve what you don’t acknowledge. Take time to name your loss. It’s brave to confront your feelings, not to stuff them down. The ancient Hebrews expressed their laments (songs of mourning) dramatically and physically by tearing their clothes, putting on sackcloth, and sitting in ashes.

2. Let Yourself Feel the Pain of Your Loss

Let yourself feel the pain of the loss. Avoiding pain only buries it alive, leading to symptoms like depression and anxiety. Jesus Himself took time to grieve, as seen when He withdrew to be alone after hearing about John the Baptist’s death.

” As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone.”
-Matthew 14:13

3. Remember the Person or Thing Lost

Share memories, talk about the good and the bad. Avoiding triggers only prolongs the pain. Embrace the memories, even if they bring tears. Don’t move quickly, sit in the confusing in-between.

4. Discover a New Self-Identity

Who are you now in this new place of life? Loss changes us, and it’s essential to discover who you are in this new season.

5. Search for Meaning

As you heal, you’ll find meaning. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works everything together for the good of those who love Him. Your pain has a purpose, and God will use it to bring about new life.

Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.
They weep as they go to plant their seed,
but they sing as they return with the harvest.
-Psalm 126:5-6

6. Utilize Your Support Network

Don’t go through this alone. Lean on your community, your church, and your friends. If you don’t have a safe person, write it out or seek professional help.
