What is Love? Discovering the Heart of Connection

Have you ever found yourself pondering the question, “What is love?” It’s a question that has intrigued philosophers, poets, and thinkers throughout history. From Plato to modern-day researchers, such as Haddaway and Ron Burgundy, the quest to define love has been a journey of exploration and discovery. In our recent sermon series, “Atlas of the Heart,” we delved into this profound question, seeking to understand love not just as an emotion but as a divine attribute that shapes our very existence. Today, let’s embark on a journey to uncover the true essence of love and how it can transform our lives and relationships.

What is Love? A Divine Perspective

At the heart of our exploration is the biblical truth that “God is love.” This isn’t merely a poetic expression; it’s a foundational truth that defines who we are as human beings. In 1 John 4:7-13, we learn that love not only originates from God, and when we love others, we reflect His divine nature. If God is love, and we were created in God’s image, than love is part of who we are! This means that love is not just a fleeting emotion or a simple action; it is a core aspect of our identity as beings created in the image of God.

“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.  But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
1 John 4:7-8

This understanding challenges us to see love as more than just a feeling. It is a calling, an invitation to open our hearts and connect deeply with others. Love is the lens through which we view the world, filled with compassion, empathy, and grace. It is the driving force that compels us to reach out, to forgive, and to build meaningful relationships.

The Complexity of Love: Emotion and Existence

While love is often debated as an emotion, it transcends mere feelings. It is woven into the fabric of our existence. Love is a part of our being, a reflection of the divine image within us. This is why we naturally seek love, desire connection, and feel the pain of its absence. Love is the foundation upon which our relationships are built, and it is the force that binds us together in community.

Yet, love is not without its challenges. It requires vulnerability and trust, and it often involves risking heartbreak and betrayal. In the story of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, we see a poignant example of love in action. Despite their heartbreak and feelings of betrayal when Jesus didn’t arrive in time to heal Lazarus, Mary and Martha’s trust in Jesus remained steadfast. They opened their hearts to Him, and in doing so, witnessed a miracle that strengthened their faith and connection to God.

Taking Action: Living Out Love

So, how can we embody this divine love in our daily lives? It begins with a conscious decision to open our hearts and nurture love in our relationships. Here are some practical steps you can take:

1. Reach Out to Others: Make an effort to connect with someone you’ve been distant from. Whether it’s a phone call, a text, or a face-to-face meeting, take the initiative to rebuild bridges and strengthen your relationships.

2. Offer Forgiveness: Holding onto grudges and past hurts can hinder our ability to love fully. Choose to forgive those who have wronged you, and experience the freedom that comes with letting go of resentment.

3. Practice Vulnerability: Love requires us to be open and honest with ourselves and others. Share your thoughts and feelings with those you trust, and allow yourself to be seen and known.

4. Spend Time in Prayer: Connect with love himself. Ask God to fill you with His love and guide you in your interactions with others. Prayer is a powerful way to align your heart with God’s purpose and to seek His wisdom in your relationships.

5. Serve Others: Look for opportunities to serve those around you, whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or simply being present for someone in need. Serving others is a tangible expression of love and a way to reflect God’s love in the world.

Reflect on this: What is one way you can show love to someone this week? How can you be a reflection of God’s love in your community? Remember, without taking this step, you might miss out on the fullness of life that Jesus wants for you.

Conclusion and Prayer

Dear God, thank you for showing us what true love is through your Son, Jesus. Help us to open our hearts to love others as you have loved us. Give us the courage to be vulnerable, to trust, and to connect deeply with those around us. May your love fill us and guide us in all that we do. Amen. As you go forth, may you be a beacon of love in a world that is searching for connection and belonging. Embrace the divine love within you, and let it transform your life and the lives of those around you.
